A look at Nepal's Past

The history of Nepal has been influenced by its position in the Himalayas and its two modern day  neighbors India and China. Due to the "arrival of disparate settler" groups from outside throught the ages it is now multiethenic, multiracial, multicultural, multireligious, and multilingual country. Central Nepal was spilit into three kingdoms from 15 th century to 18 th century, when it was re-unified under the Shah monarchy.

Many dynasties ruled in Nepal. these are Gopal, Ahir, Kirat, Lichhavi, Malla, Sen and Shah. Their rules were divided into different periods or ages. Gopal, Kirat and Lichhavi ruled in ancient peroid. Malla, Sen, and Shah rules in the Medieval and Modern period. Lets know some of the dynasties that rules Nepal.

Gopal Dynasty

Eight Kings of Gopla dynasty ruled 521 years in Nepal. They were Bhaktaman, Jaya Gupta, Param Gupta, Bhim Gupta, Mani Gupta, Visnu Gupta, and Yaksha Gupta.

Ahir Dynasty

Yaksha Gupta has no issue. Therefore, Bhul Singh of Ahir dynasty became the king of nepal. Three king of Ahir dynasty ruled for 161 years. They were Bhul Singh, Jaya Singh, and Bhywan Singh.

Ahir Dynasty

Yalamber defeated Bhuwan Singh and founded Kirat dynasty in Nepal. He was the first Kirat king of Nepal. He ruled 13 years. Twenty nine other Kirat ruled in Nepal. Gasti was the last Kirat King.
Kirat rule was very famous. the book called Arthasastra written by Kautilya, mentions the popularity of Nepalese blankets in the markets of Modern Bihar, India. Most of the amous place of kathmandu calley are of Kirat origin for example Khopring for Bhaktapur, Yal for Patan, Thanku for Thankot and Tonku for Teku. Kirat were very strong and brave people. they were war like people and developed weapons of different types and sizes. they used arrow and bows during war time.

Golden age in Nepalese History

Sombamsi rajput named Nimish defeated Kirat king Gasti and establish Sombamsi dynasty. After Nimish, other Sombamsi kings such as Matachha, kakbarma, Pasuperchha Deva and Bhaskar Verma ruled one after another. Bhaskar Verma has no issue. Therefore, he adopted Bhumi Verma as his successor. Bhumi Verma was of solar dynasty. they were called Suryabamsi Lichhavi.

Manadeva I

Manadeva I was the famous Lichhavi king of Nepal. He was the son of Dharma Deva. His mother Rajyabati helped him in the administration and expansion of the kingdom. he had erected inscription in front of the temple of Changunarayan in the northern part of Bhaktapur. the Inscription tells about the expansion of the kingdom up to Mallapuri in the west and suppression of the feudal in the east.

Some Key Dates

1768 - Gurkha ruler Prithvi Narayan Shah conquers Kathmandu and lays foundations for unified kingdom.
1814-16 - Anglo-Nepalese War; culminates in treaty which establishes Nepal's current boundaries.1846 - Nepal falls under sway of hereditary chief ministers known as Ranas, who dominate the monarchy and cut country off from outside world.1950 - Anti-Rana forces based in India form alliance with monarch.1951 - End of Rana rule. Sovereignty of crown restored and anti-Rana rebels in Nepalese Congress Party form government.1960 - King Mahendra seizes control and suspends parliament, constitution and party politics.1991 - Nepali Congress Party wins first democratic elections.1995-2006 - Maoist revolt which kills thousands.2008 - Nepal becomes a republic after abolition of monarchy.2015 September - New constitution adopted - the first in Asia to specifically protect gay rights.
